Whiplash is a deeply personal and vibrantly alive drama directed by Damien Chazelle. Andrew, the hero of the film, is an ambitious music student. He aspires to be no less than the greatest living jazz drummer, and he thus devotes himself, with monk-like rigour, to its gruelling practice. His teacher, Fletcher hardly seems sated by Andrew’s persistent improvements. The most compelling aspect of the film, however, is not the philosophy but the music and it is terrific. Whiplash could succeed in turning you into a jazz fan, as it did to me. So, there is no limit to the miracles it can accomplish. "Bird man" soared late at the 87th Academy Awards, winning the big prize: best picture. Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Best Director trophy at the Oscars for Birdman, a recognition of the astounding technical feat of making nearly the entire film appear to take place in a single shot, as well as a nod to his long career. Birdman also won three other other Oscars: best cinematography and best original screenplay. It’s powerfully clear that they all worked their best to make this complicated thrill ride look effortless. Celebrities from Debbie Reynolds (Burbank High graduate and Miss Burbank 1948), Tim Burton, Helen Hunt, Ron Howard to Elijah Wood and Blake Lively call Burbank home.
